To pay an homage to the original character of their home, Northeastern State University professors Beth Melles and Audell Shelburne started their renovation process with a redesigned staircase and entryway. Their house, designed by Oklahoma City-based architect Duane Conner, is a mid-century modern-designed home that was built around the 1960s. This staircase – one of many hopeful renovations – aims to blend contemporary design into the original framework.
Solid 3-inch treads attached to plate-steel stringers lead to the den where the couple spends most of their time to soak up the natural light. The richness of the locally sourced walnut wood behind the staircase creates an intimacy throughout the entry, welcoming guests into the couple’s nook.
